Two teams represented Ireland in the 49erFX Junior (Under23) World Championships in the Royal Danish Yacht Club, Copenhagen.

Of these 4 sailors 3 hail from Northern Ireland, Erin McIlwaine (Newcastle YC) paired up with Ellen Barbour (East Antrim BC) and Charlotte Eadie (Ballyholme Yacht Club) alongside Lauren O’Callaghan (National Yacht Club).

The event faced gusty winds, rain, and frustrating lulls, testing sailors’ adaptability.

Two days were lost to calm conditions, but the final day brought 10–12 knots building to mid-high teens, allowing for four decisive races.

Erin and Ellen maintained a top-ten position throughout the regatta, showcasing consistency and tactical skill. Climbed from 4th to 3rd place on the final day, securing a bronze medal.

Only one race was completed on the final day due to rapidly deteriorating weather, limiting opportunities for teams to climb the leader board.

Charlotte and Lauren also scored some credible results with the duo, finishing 20th overall in a competitive fleet. Despite not reaching the top tier, their participation marked a strong international showing and valuable experience at a world-class level.

“I am very proud of how these girls have progressed and taken on the challenge of an Olympic Campaign. Results should never be the goal; it is all about the process and living the journey to become the best version of yourself as a sailor. Results, good or bad, can be a motivation to keep pushing. That said, a Medal and a World Championship is fantastic and hopefully will highlight to the NI Sailing communities back home what is possible.” – Andrew Baker PM RYANI

Development Context

As part of Northern Ireland’s Sailing program, these teams’ participation contributes to the broader development of the female and double-handed pathways.

Their performance adds depth to Ireland’s presence in the 49erFX class which in turn gives our grassroots RS Feva Sailors something to aspire to and a realisation of what is possible.
