I am a 22 year old recent Engineering graduate currently training and racing full-time in the ILCA 7 class. After learning to sail at Donaghadee Sailing Club I moved to Ballyholme Yacht Club when transitioning to the ILCA class from Toppers. These clubs led me to have a promising youth career.

However at the age of 18 I suffered from an infection of Covid-19 in May of 2021. This led me into a three year battle with chronic fatigue. After over two years of ups and downs with the proper monitoring and recovery strategies I gained back my strength and my body returned to its natural self.

Now healthy I am once again pursuing my sailing goals. After 6 months back in the boat I was able to become the Irish National champion in 2024. Now I move onto preparing for this oncoming 2025 session, the first of the new Olympic cycle.

  • 2017 – 3rd Topper world championships
  • 2017 – Irish youth sailor of the year
  • 2x Northern Irish youth champion
  • 2019 – British National Youth champion Radial
  • 2024 – Irish National senior champion

I am currently completely self-funded and need all the help I can get in this next period.

If you cannot support but have some ideas, potential partners or sponsors then please do get in touch with me.

My name is Tom Coulter, I’m 19 years old and come from Ballymena. I finished my A levels at Ballymena Academy in 2024 and am currently taking a gap year before uni to focus on my sailing goals.

Following the 2024 summer competition season where highlights were the U21 European Championships in Mallorca and the British Nationals in Weymouth, I’ve been spending a lot of time training in Spain and Portugal to try and make the best use of my gap year and improve my fitness and performance.

I’m looking forward to summer 2025 where I will compete in the U21 Europeans in Croatia and the Worlds which are in Dublin this year.

When did you start Sailing?

I’m a little unusual in that no one in my family sails and I stumbled into sailing by chance. I was in Portrush one summer, aged 11, and decided to have a go at a sailing taster session I saw advertised at Portrush Yacht Club. I absolutely loved it and have been hooked ever since.

When did you start Sailing your current class?

I began sailing a Topper dingy at 11, then progressed directly to ILCA6, skipping the ILCA4 rig as I was growing so fast. I transitioned to the ILCA7 full rig in September 2023, aged 18.

Career highlight so far.

My career highlight so far was definitely winning the Irish ILCA6 National & Open Championships in Howth in 2023. I had just returned to competitive sailing following injury, which meant that I was devastated to miss out on the World and Europeans Championships in Poland earlier that year.

I focussed hard on my rehab and recovery and was determined to come back fighting. The event itself was extremely tough, given the wild conditions created by storm Betty and the extremely close finish which made for a very exciting event. All these factors made the win all the sweeter!

Favourite boat?

Definitely the ILCA7. The speed and power of the full rig is addictive.

Future Goals?

Still mapping out my short-term goals but the ultimate sailing goal is to make the Senior Irish team and compete at Brisbane 2032.

Charlotte Eadie

My name is Charlotte Eadie, I am from Newtownards. Currently an undergraduate doing Sport and Exercise Science in Ulster University alongside balancing a 49er FX campaign with my helm Lauren O’Callaghan.
I will say that it comes with its challenges, but the rewards are much greater. The experiences and countries we travel to are next to non and the little free time I get spent with family, friends and at home is valued much more.

When did I start sailing?
I started sailing when I was 9 years old coming from a family that had no knowledge of what sailing involved. I began my sailing journey in the world of single handers starting in topper 5.3 at Donaghadee Sailing Club. I then joined to Ballyholme Yacht Club when transitioning to the ILCA 6 class and still an active member in both.
In 2022, I was picked up by the Irish Sailing Association to join their ILCA 6 Performance Academy where I then trained and competed with this team for a year before aging out.

When did you start sailing your current class?
I started my 49erFX career in October 2023 feeding directly from the ILCA 6 Academy. Although, it was my first double hander I stepped foot in and the challenges were and still are big, but I have not looked back. In July 2024 I partnered with Lauren.

Favourite Boat
It definitely has to be the 49erFX, the high speeds, adrenalin and teamwork required is something that the FX demands and I love it!

Future Goals
To represent Ireland in an Olympic Games.

Ellen Barbour

My name is Ellen Barbour, I’m 21 years old and come from Whitehead. I am currently trying to balance a 49er campaign with an undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin which comes with its challenges, but, in turn, makes it all the more rewarding. In the little spare time that I have I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.
After training hard this winter we have an exciting season ahead; training in Vilamoura this winter/spring before heading into the competition season where we will target the U23 Worlds in Copenhagen and the Senior Worlds in Sardinia.
When did you start sailing?
I first stepped into a sailing boat at the age of 2 but my sailing journey officially started when I completed the RYA level 1 course when I was 8 at County Antrim Yacht Club and then my level 2 later that summer in the Lake District.
When did you start sailing your current class?
My racing experience started on the Optimist circuit. I then moved into the topper 4.2 and made my way up through the topper, ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 Youth Performance Squads. During my gap my year I was given the opportunity to try out the 49er fx following a back injury that made sailing the ILCA 6 difficult and haven’t looked back since.
Career Highlight
I love that sailing allows you to travel the world. It brought me to China for the Topper Worlds in 2018 and although we didn’t squeeze in many races we were able to experience sailing on the other side of the world whilst getting a taste for the Chinese culture.
Favourite Boat
It now has to be the 49erFX. I love the high speed, performance skills and dynamic teamwork that the 49erFX brings.
Future Goals
Qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in LA

I started sailing in Newcastle Yacht Club, and have experience racing a variety of boats including the Topper, 29er, ILCA 6, and now the 49er FX. I am currently living in Dublin, and I am completing my undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy (Trinity College Dublin) alongside my 49er campaign. When I’m not on the water, or in college, I love running in the mountains with my dog, and exploring new places on my bike, especially when we are training or competing abroad!

When did you start Sailing?

I started sailing in the Mirror class when I was around 5 years old, before moving into the Topper class soon after. I competed in this class until I was 14, at which point I moved into the 29er with my brother, Luke.

When did you start Sailing your current class?

I began sailing the 49er FX in the Summer of 2022 and haven’t looked back since!

Career highlight so far. Could be a result or an experience.

I would say travelling to China for the Topper World Championships in 2018 – after many years in the Topper, this would be my last international event in this class (not to mention it was an incredible cultural experience!)

Favourite boat?

The FX, of course!

Future Goals?

Qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles
