It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks for Optimist sailing in Northern Ireland, with two standout events showcasing the incredible depth of young talent coming through the province. From an open training weekend that brought together 18 aspiring sailors, to a fiercely competitive Ulster Championships regatta at Strangford Lough Yacht Club, the future of Optimist sailing in Northern Ireland is looking very bright indeed.

Open Training Weekend
The weekend before the SLYC regatta, we hosted an Open Training event that brought together 18 aspiring Optimist sailors from across Northern Ireland. The session gave young sailors the chance to develop their skills in a structured environment, and the enthusiasm and commitment on show was brilliant to see. Events like this are vital for building the next generation of competitive sailors and with the Commonwealth Youth Games on the horizon, the timing couldn’t be better.
”"Weekends like this are exactly what we need. Bringing 18 young sailors together for open training, then seeing that translate into competitive racing at SLYC — it's a really encouraging sign for the future of Optimist sailing in Ulster."

CH Marine Optimist Ulster Regatta at SLYC
The main event at Strangford Lough Yacht Club was a big success, with a strong turnout and excellent racing. The standard of sailing was high throughout, a testament to the hard work being put in by sailors and their coaches.
With the Commonwealths approaching, these events are giving our young sailors exactly the competitive experience they need. Keep an eye out for updates as selection news develops.
