Northern Irish Sailing Team members, Dan McGaughey and Charlotte Eadie have just finished competing in the Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta in Palma.

The Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta is one of the most prestigious dinghy events outside of the Olympic Games and has a long history of attracting the best sailors from all across the world.

This was the 54th edition of the Princess Sofia Trophy and all ten Olympic classes were represented, racing in some varied conditions.

Competition at this regatta is extremely hard, but it was a great experience for Dan (competing in the ILCA 7) and Charlotte (competing in the 49er FX).

Speaking after the event, RYA Northern Ireland Performance Manager, Andrew Baker, said: “As our sailors progress into the Senior Olympic classes, they are able to compete through age group events such as the Under 21 worlds or under 23 in the FX. This ensures an even learning curve from youth into senior.

“To dip their toe in the waters of senior Olympic level competition is a massive step. Athletes will enter these events with learning objectives as the goal rather than results-based. Exposing themselves to realising what it takes to reach the top will inspire them to push on and refocus on where gains can be made. Rubbing gunwale with the best in the business of a start line is an experience some can only dream off.”
