Northern Irish sailors competing at the Topper British Nationals at Largs Sailing Club backed up their fantastic results at the recent World Championships in Medemblik in an unbelievable week of sailing.
Adam Green, Ben McCaldin and Leo West-Hurst were in action between the 3rd and 8th of August at the Scottish club and showcased their class with some top-quality performances.
Lough Erne Yacht Club’s Adam Green continued his form his 5th place finish at the World Championships, finishing 3rd. Green put together a great series, scoring 5 top 5 results across the 9 race series.
Fellow Lough Erne sailor Ben McCaldin finished in 13th place. Four top 10 finishes highlighted that Ben was on top form across the week, but unfortunately two DNC results affected his overall position.
Close behind Ben, was Leo-West Hurst in 16th position. The Ballyholme Yacht Club sailor had some very good results across the week including a 2nd place in race 1 and a 6th place in race 4. Ending his week with a BFD result had a negative impact on his score, but for a young sailor, he can certainly take heart from finishing high up the leaderboard against some of the best Topper sailors in Britain.

It has been a fantastic season for the Topper sailors on the NI Sailing Team and on top of their strong performances at the World Championships, they were also part of the ‘Celtic Cup Clean Sweep’ in February when Northern Irish ILCA and Topper sailors beat their Welsh and Scottish counterparts in head-to-head competition.
As the Summer season draws to a close, Northern Ireland Sailing Team sailors will now look ahead to the John Minnis Youth Championships which will be hosted at Ballyholme Yacht Club on 13 and 14 September.
The John Minnis Youth Championships is a major selection event for the Northern Ireland Sailing Team and it is Northern Ireland’s largest annual multi-class dinghy event.
