Topper sailors on the Northern Irish Sailing Team continued their strong 2025 form at the Topper Southern Championships, producing some outstanding performances across the two-day event.

Hosted at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club on 14 and 15 June, nine of the team were in action, competing in strong winds and big waves typical to the region.

Lough Erne Yacht Club’s Adam Green finished the weekend as the overall winner, in a dominant victory which saw him win 4/6 races and winning with a race to spare.

On top of Adam Green’s overall win, the results from the rest of the NI Sailing Team were hugely impressive and are definite reasons for optimism for larger events such as the Irish Nationals and World Championships later in the season. These results were:

  • Adam Green 1st overall
  • Leo West-Hurst 3rd overall
  • Ben-McCaldin 4th overall
  • Alex Eadie 2nd girl (6th overall)
  • James Eadie 7th overall
  • Charlie Haslett 15th overall
  • Emma West-Hurst 5th girl (17th overall)
  • Zoe West-Hurst 7th girl (23rd overall)
  • Hugh Hutchinson 25th overall

Following the event, RYA Northern Ireland Performance Manager, Andrew Baker, commented: “Seeing these results is great. It shows what talent we have in Northern Ireland and to have a number of strong performances highlights the depth starting to develop across the whole squad.

“Ultimately, this is junior class racing and at this level. Results as only an indicator but the real potential for these athletes is demonstrated through their commitment to work outside of championships. This is things such as coachability, commitment and off-water efforts in the gym.

“Long-term development is the key in junior and youth classes. It’s often about setting the tone for what’s next and the ‘can do’ attitudes needed when they move up the pipeline. Our 2025 NI Sailing Team Topper squad are demonstrating these qualities well and deserves the results that come after the hard work.”

The development seen from the NI Sailing Team, building from their ‘Celtic Cup Clean Sweep’ to their resent performances at the Eric Twiname Championships is great to see and is certainly reflective of the upward trajectory of their performances.
