Three outstanding young athletes were recognised at the RYA Northern Ireland Annual General Meeting last week, as the organisation honoured this year’s Junior Sailors of the Year for their exceptional commitment, progression and performance on the water throughout 2025.
The awards highlight rising talent across Northern Ireland and celebrate the dedication behind their achievements, with each sailor offering a glimpse into the future of the sport.
Junior Male Sailor of the Year: Adam Green (Lough Erne Yacht Club)
Adam has delivered an outstanding season at national and international level, finishing a remarkable 5th overall at the 2025 Topper World Championships in Medemblik, including two race wins through the series. He also secured victory at the Topper Winter Championships earlier this year, demonstrating consistency, resilience and maturity across major events.
His progress reflects not only talent, but strong work ethic and commitment to continuous improvement.
Junior Female Sailors of the Year: Emily & Annabel Ridout (Cushendall S&BC)
Emily and Annabel achieved exceptional success in 2025, claiming Gold at the RS Feva European Championships in Riva del Garda after a highly competitive week of racing. They also won the RS Feva Northern Championships with five race wins from six, underlining their strong partnership and tactical ability throughout the season.
Their performances have positioned them among the most exciting emerging crews in Northern Ireland.
A Bright Future on the Water
Performance Manager, Hammy McMillan, congratulated the sailors on their achievements:
“These young sailors have shown outstanding commitment throughout the season. Their dedication, attitude and performances set a brilliant example for younger sailors coming through, and we are excited to support their progression over the year ahead.”
Recognising Development and Opportunity
The Junior Sailor of the Year awards form part of RYA Northern Ireland’s continued commitment to recognising progression, celebrating achievement and supporting young athletes as they move through clubs, classes and the performance pathway.
Looking Ahead
All three recipients shared reflections on their season during a Q&A at the AGM, discussing their goals, challenges and where they hope to be in five years’ time.
Their passion and ambition highlight the growing strength of youth sailing across Northern Ireland.
